Collection: Robert (Bobby) Sutton

Robert "Bobby" Sutton was an incredibly talented black artist local to Evansville, Indiana. Twymon Art Gallery has the honor of keeping and displaying a large body of his work. 

Bobby Sutton was born in Owensboro KY on October 14, 1936. He was raised in Evansville, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He was part of the local art talent for over 35 years, making him truly part of Evansville's rich black history. His favorite mediums to work in were oil, pastels, and watercolors. His subject matter varied greatly from magnificent landscapes to portraits of people; highlighting black/African portraits in oil. 

Sutton was an art lover from the time he was in grade school, until he passed peacefully in his Evansville, IN home on September 8, 2021. By the end of his life, he had become renowned as one on the most successful artists in the Tri-state, best known for his solo exhibitions.

His career highlights include consecutive 1st place awards in the 80 Black Expo Art Competition and the Coalition of 100 Black Women's history exhibits, and International Tea. He was commissioned by EHA to teach fundamentals of art to children in after-school programs.

"You must pick up that one distinguishing mark that tells who they are, and make sure you have drawn it accurately. It could be beautiful eyes, birth mark, dimples, nose whatever feature is that out most is what you have to get on the canvas. Drawing is a mental thing being able to put what you see on paper it's a process learned throughout life."
